Malcolm Gibbs was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Kansas City. He's been interested in theatre since a young age, acting since the age of eight, directing since the age of fifteen, and writing for his whole life.
As a playwright, his most recent works have been a one-act play Muerta in Tuscon, AZ produced by the University Theatre Association at the University Missouri, Kansas City, as well as a ten-minute play Dale vs. Good vs. Evil also produced at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He is currently working a full-length play, working title Every Hundred Years.
As an actor, Malcolm is very fortunate to have represented a wide range of roles and styles, mostly at the University of Missouri Kansas City. Favorites include Egeon in A Comedy of Errors, Her Father in Eurydice, Martin Luther in Wittenberg, and Van in Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.
As a director, Malcolm co-directed a night of one-acts, directing Untitled (Or What You Make of it) by Joshua Woodall and co-directing a night of ten-minute plays including The Voyager and One Fish, Two Fish. He also directed and adapted The Princess Bride into a script-in-hand production for the stage with the University Theatre Association. Most recently he directed You Are (Not) Okay at the Kansas City Fringe Festival, produced by Subject to Change Theater (a production company he co-founded to produce original works for college-aged playwrights.)
In addition to his theatrical work, Malcolm coproduced, cowrote, and cohosted the Appraised By Media (iTunes) podcast, a weekly show about an inter-dimensional pawn-shop that receives items from the void, in which Malcolm and his brother Duncan appraise the items for their worth, and determine the best way to make money off of these unexplained, otherworldy items.
Lastly, in his limited free time, Malcolm is a dungeon master/game master, Tabletop RPG fanatic, and One-Page RPG designer. He started playing Dungeons and Dragons when he was just 11 years old. He has been the dungeon master of a home-brew Pathfinder game for almost three years, designing the modules, organizing the weekly sessions, and building the world and playable terrain, as well as running and playing in multiple other groups in the Star Wars RPG, Lasers and Feelings systems, and any game by Grant Howitt. He also is designing and play-testing three different one-page RPGs called Anyone Can Cook!, Benders and Boomerangs, and Idle Hands.
Malcolm graduated with a double major in Theatre Performance and English, Creative Writing from the University of Missouri, Kansas City in May of 2019.
As of August 2021 Malcolm has accepted the role of Director of Development and Marketing with Kansas City Actors Theatre (KCAT). In 2017 and 2018 Malcolm served as the Development and Marketing intern with KCAT and cannot wait to help KCAT continue to grow.
*Malcolm is a former prep cook and line cook, as well as a voracious home chef who has been learning new skills and developing recipes of his own. Malcolm has worked in the restaurant industry all his life, having worked in many positions at many restaurants, including serving, bartending, over six years of barista experience, butchering and restaurant management.
